CIAOStories About Melissa #3
by Bethany Lopez
Publication Date: August 15, 2012
Source: Blog Tour
Melissa has had a fantastic summer hanging out with her friends and making new ones. Life as she knows it will change when they all come together to begin their sophomore year at Dearborn High. Connections will be made and friendships will be tested. Will Melissa’s family and friends be able to help her through the challenges she will face in the upcoming months?
Bethany Lopez's Stories About Melissa novels have all been quick reads filled with teenage fun and silly drama. Ciao does introduce this group of sophomores to more serious issues, but the overall tone stays light-hearted.
Lopez does an excellent job of keeping true to the youthful way of thinking and portrays Melissa as the average fifteen year old. Most of her worries center around boys, friendship, and family. While Lopez's character development is on the right path, the story itself could use more depth and filling. Since all the stories are written as if Melissa is writing in a journal, events are summarized and shortened, not giving readers the full experience.
Melissa's insistence on keeping a journal is understandable, but the journal format just doesn't work for this story. If it weren't for the humor and heartbreaking drama, Ciao and its series companions would be a little less entertaining. Fortunately, Ciao is an extremely quick read that will be enjoyable for all age groups!*Ebook provided in exchange for an honest review*
