Character Interview: Natalie Johnson from The Dream Slayer by Jill Cooper

Meet Natalie Johnson! The shy girl from Meadow's Creek? The girl whose dreams are made of serious paranormal-sauce? I give up! Natalie Johnson is the star character of The Dream Slayer, a YA paranormal novel recently released by Jill Cooper! Get to know her fears and fancies in this short interview.

Hi Natalie! It’s so great to have you here on Lovey Dovey Books. Can you tell us a little about yourself? Come on, don’t be shy!

Hey there! Oh look, people are going to read what I say? Excuse me while wince. No seriously, I didn’t sign up for this sort of attention when I created a dream alternate dimension, by mistake, whoops!

Well, as you can see I am sort of mild mannered. I’m chunky, wear glasses, and most kids at school ignore me like I don’t exist. Which is better than the other kids at school who do nothing but torture me from the moment I step on the bus.

So I guess that’s when my dreams started taking a life of their own, and who doesn’t love a little adventure and romance in their dreams? Who was I to know they’d take on a life of their own?

What’s your dream self like?

Wow, she’s just everything to me, really. It’s not that just she’s beautiful, because she is. But it’s all the other stuff that comes with being her. She’s confident, strong, funny. She can quip with the best of them. She really knows how to stand up for herself and those she cares about. Who wouldn’t want to be like that?

Just don’t tell her, okay? Because she doesn’t know she’s not real.

{Review} Darkness & Light by J.A. Belfield

Darkness & Light

A Holloway Pack Novel #1
by J.A. Belfield
Publication Date: June 6, 2011 (ebook)
Publisher: J. Taylor Publishing
Source: Purchased

Jem Stonehouse, a housewife with a neurotic husband bent on keeping her in line, dreams about werewolves in, what she believes to be, a bid to escape boredom.

Sean Holloway is a werewolf, living a charade within the human race, whose mind drifts to a bond he shares with a woman he hasn’t met—at least, not in this lifetime.

Apart, the two are safe, but live unfulfilled lives.

Together, they’ll become prey to rival packs, just as they have been for hundreds of years.

When their worlds collide, instinct takes over. Dreams become reality. Their renewed bond deepens. To keep history from repeating itself, Sean must teach Jem about his heritage, convince her of her role, and win her love.

Can Jem accept her destiny before it’s too late, or is her inner wolf buried too deep to save her future with Sean?

Purchase: Amazon | B&N | Powell's
J.A. Belfield has successfully made werewolves my favorite paranormal creatures of the night. Darkness & Light depicts werewolves as fierce and romantic, what could be better? This story of soulmates once again reuniting is unique and engaging. Jem and Sean have a love that inevitably repeats itself. Their history isn't revealed in one sitting, but spread throughout the novel. There's no chance of getting confused when learning what it means for Jem and Sean as soul mates and what dangers arise because of their bond.

Belfield begins Darkness & Light by allowing readers to get to know Jem. I believe that what is learned about Jem during her time with her not-so-nice husband Peter, interactions with her best friend Poppy and sister Jess, helps reader understand Jem's stubbornness and actions. Yes, Jem is highly stubborn but it's one of her best traits and gets her through tough situations.

I couldn't help but fall in love with Jem Stonehouse and her new pack family: the Holloways and the Larsens. Belfield presents to readers a group of men with strong protective mentalities. It's impossible not to appreciate the way Sean's friends and family dote on Jem and treat her like one of their own. It may become slightly difficult to remember who's who in the pack, but it doesn't take away from the plot, and certain pack members eventually stand out.

The latest ebook version of Darkness & Light comes with a brand new, exquisite cover and bonus chapters in Sean's point of view. These special looks into Sean's mind amp up the romance to dangerous levels of sexy! While those few chapters don't show much of Sean's reactions to danger, seeing him through Jem's eyes in the full length novel is enough to prove how exciting his fierceness makes the story!

{Author Interview}: Jill Cooper, author of The Dream Slayer

Avid readers know that most authors like to think outside the box for their next big story. Scroll through your 'to-read' list on Goodreads and notice how increasingly unique books are becoming. In today's interview with debut author Jill Cooper, who is indeed a 'think outside the box' author, learn why she writes for young adults and where her writing inspiration comes from.

Welcome to Lovey Dovey Books! It’s wonderful to have you here and we’d love for you to tell us 3 fun facts about yourself.

Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to be here and meet all of you! Three fun facts about me, who knew thinking up 3 fun facts could be challenging?
  • I’m a lefty. Every time I meet another lefty, I get excited. Lefties unite!
  • I’m obsessed with Hello Kitty. My kitchen alone has the Hello Kitty clock, toaster, and waffle iron. Next up is the pink hello kitty microwave. I even put a picture of it on my Facebook wall.
  • I’m a major gaming nerd! Currently playing in my ‘spare’ time Mass Effect 3, and the Knights of the Republi MMO. If only I could play as a droid, my life would be complete.

What has motivated you to write, especially for young adults?

That’s such an interesting question. I knew I had a very specific story I wanted to tell. Which is Girls of all shapes and sizes can be heroes, love themselves, and believe in themselves. I knew that was the theme I was working with.

As a young adult I wasn’t perfect and didn’t have the ideal body. I still don’t, but as a young adult that was really hard to deal with. It battered my self-esteem down and I felt like everyone was judging me. It took a long time for my self-confidence to grow and realize that I can love myself for who I am.My self-worth doesn’t come from my shape, size, clothes, or social status anymore. It comes from within.

Wow, did I just type that sentence? I feel so enlightened! Sprinkle in some danger, romance, and mystery and Dream Slayer was born. But it was important to me that it have a healthy message beneath all the fun.

{Blog Tour} Guest Post + Giveaway: Starring in the Movie of my Life by Laurel Osterkamp

Voices in My Head

I really like reading books that are written in the first person, because it gives me a chance to get inside someone else’s head. I think it’s the most intimate sort of reading experience. So, it only makes sense for me to write in the first person as well. It’s what comes naturally for me.

The problem is, it’s limiting. One main character has to be in every scene in the book. The only way around that is to write from multiple character perspectives.

That’s what I did for Starring in the Movie of My Life. It was difficult at first, but it never occurred to me to do it any other way. The story always belonged to both Samantha and Melody. Since I love writing in first person, alternating their points of view was pretty fun. The most exciting chapters to write were the ones where the two of them were together in the same room. I loved observing Samantha through the Melody’s eyes, or vice-versa.

However, most of the chapters featured only one of them. At times it was easier for me to write for Melody, and at times Samantha’s chapters came easier. I guess I sort of went through phases. However, I always enjoyed developing both of them, trying to make them real.

I started by giving them a heroic quality. Samantha was extremely compassionate, and Melody was the ultimate survivor. I know a lot of readers found Melody to be pretty unlikeable, but in a weird way I’m protective of her.  However, I guess Samantha is my favorite because she has such a big heart and potential strength. Of the major characters, I’d have to say Nathan is my least favorite. It’s not his fault, but I don’t think he grows over the course of the story the way the others do.

Anyway, the most difficult part was attention to detail; how do I make Melody and Samantha sound like two different people through word choice and response to conflict? In the end I’m not sure how good I was at it, but I haven’t gotten any complaints, so I’m hoping I did okay.

The book I’m working on now, November Surprise, is written in the first person, but there’s only one character who narrates. However, it’s told in vignettes, and takes place over the course of twenty years. So I’m trying to be cognizant of how Lucy will change over time, her maturity, her perspective, etc. Also, what will stay the same? In some ways this is more difficult than having two narrators. But I’m a writing geek, so I love the challenge.

{Review} Dark Descendant by Jenna Black

Dark Descendant

by Jenna Black
Publication Date: April 26, 2011
Publisher:  Pocket Books
Pages: 336

From the acclaimed author of the Morgan Kingsley, Exorcist books comes the gripping first novel in a new series about a private eye who discovers, to her surprise, that she’s an immortal huntress.

Nikki Glass can track down any man. But when her latest client turns out to be a true descendant of Hades, Nikki now discovers she can’t die. . . . Crazy as it sounds, Nikki’s manhunting skills are literally god-given. She’s a living, breathing descendant of Artemis who has stepped right into a trap set by the children of the gods. Nikki’s new “friends” include a descendant of Eros, who uses sex as a weapon; a descendant of Loki, whose tricks are no laughing matter; and a half-mad descendant of Kali who thinks she’s a spy. But most powerful of all are the Olympians, a rival clan of immortals seeking to destroy all Descendants who refuse to bow down to them. In the eternal battle of good god/bad god, Nikki would make a divine weapon. But if they think she’ll surrender without a fight, the gods must be crazy. . .

Review

Dark Descendant is a decidedly original work of fiction. Yes, we've all read stories that somehow relate to the gods of Greek mythology. However, I can safely say that none of those stories were quite as unique as Jenna Black's first novel introducing Nikki Glass, private-eye extraordinaire.

Through a twist of fate, Nikki Glass finds herself thrown into a world of immortal beings and Greek god descendants. She doesn't know of her heritage from the goddess of hunting, Artemis, until she meets the Liberi. Stunned into disbelief of her new powers Nikki runs and finds herself stuck between the harsh, cruel Olympians and the safety of her adoptive sister.

I must say that for all the trouble Nikki had to deal with because of her heritage, she didn't exactly show much power. At least, not anything tangible like lightning bolts or bursts of white energy. So she can track people down with 100% accuracy, but I refuse to believe that is the extent of her powers. Nikki isn't particularly a tough girl. I like my heroines to be confident, defiant, and not afraid to admit when they're wrong. I didn't see that in Nikki. Sure, she was confident in her skills, but she compare herself to her sister too much for my liking. Nikki did have redeeming qualities like showing sympathy for people who may not have deserved it. She calls it a bleeding heart, but I call it compassion. She seemed to relate to one of the most volatile descendants, even after he tried to kill her!

I'm a little sad there's no romance in the story. Not as much as I'd like anyway. Black definitely gives readers a reason to drool over the pages of Dark Descendant in the form of Anderson Kane, the leader of the Liberi and a few other housemates like Blake, the descendant of Eros, and Jamaal, the descendant of a death-god. I'm holding out hope that my wishes of romance will come true in book 2 of Nikki's story, Deadly Descendant.

Add DARK DESCENDANT to Goodreads.

I'm pre-ordering my copy from Amazon so this is a great opportunity for me and everyone else to get acquainted with Riese!

Let's begin...

{Special Post} NIGHT CREATURES by Marianne de Pierres

This special post is to raise awareness of a young adult series by Marianne de Pierres. The Night Creatures Series is published by Random House Australia so it's not available to readers in the US. So that it may one day become published here I've been sharing posts on Twitter, Facebook, and my Google Plus page about it.

I want to read Night Creatures because as far as I've seen, it has all the right aspects to draw me in. The beautiful covers initially caught my attention as they aren't like our US covers. Kudos to Jaroslaw Kubicki for the delicious cover images! They seem to be darker while still keeping in mind the YA audience. Now comes the book itself. Just from reading the blurb for the first book, Burn Bright, I see that the series is dystopian with fantasy elements. It fills me with a sense of adventure that I can't wait to dive into!

Read on to find out more about the series...

Burn Bright - Night Creatures #1 (March 2011)

Into a world of wild secrets and deadly pleasures comes a girl whose innocence may be her greatest strength.

In Ixion music and party are our only beliefs. Darkness is our comfort. We have few rules but they are absolute . . .

Retra doesn’t want to go to Ixion, the island of ever-night, ever-youth and never-sleep. Retra is a Seal – sealed minds, sealed community. She doesn’t crave parties and pleasure, experience and freedom.

But her brother Joel left for Ixion two years ago, and Retra is determined to find him. Braving the intense pain of her obedience strip to escape the only home she’s ever known, Retra stows away on the barge that will take her to her brother.

When she can’t find Joel, Retra finds herself drawn deeper into the intoxicating world of Ixion. Come to me, whispers a voice in her head. Who are the Ripers, the mysterious guardians of Ixion? What are the Night Creatures Retra can see in the shadows? And what happens to those who grow too old for Ixion?

Retra will find that Ixion has its pleasures, but its secrets are deadly. Will friendship, and the creation of an eternal bond with a Riper, be enough to save her from the darkness?

Listen well, baby bats. Burn bright, but do not stray from the paths. Remember, when you live in a place of darkness you also live with creatures of the dark.
(I love this part of the blurb!! It sets flutters off in my stomach!)

Angel Arias - Night Creatures #2 (October 2011)

Retra - now called Naif - has escaped from Ixion, the island of ever-night. She doesn't know if her friends on the island survived the battle between the Ripers and the rebels. But she does know that she must return home, behind the sealed walls of Grave, to find out why the Ripers have been seen there talking to the councillors. What links the two worlds?

First she must convince Ruzalia to help her. The fierce pirate captain saves those who face terrible fates on Ixion, but that doesn't guarantee their gratitude. Instead, she faces a revolt - and Naif is caught in the middle.

Naif will need all her courage to survive. For Lenoir, who wants to keep her safe, for her friends Suki and Rollo, if they live, for Markes, who has secrets of his own, and for the new friends she will make on this journey.

The fate of worlds depends on it.
