Blog Tour: After the Dark (Review)

In New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Eden's gripping new series, a disgraced FBI profiler must save her reputation by stopping a sadistic killer she knows all too well.

Former FBI agent Samantha Dark was one of the most respected profilers in the bureau, an expert on the twisted minds and dark hearts of the most depraved criminals. But when her own former lover turned out to be the serial killer she was hunting, Samantha's career was destroyed. Blamed for the FBI's failure on the complex case, Samantha fled Washington, DC, for the quiet anonymity of Alabama.

Now an all-too-familiar killer is hunting once again. She can catch the sadistic assassin, but that means putting her trust in her former partner, Blake Gamble. Ex-military, Blake is tough, protective, precise. With her entire life on the brink, she knows he wants her back in the FBI…and possibly more.

But someone else wants her, too. A threat is waiting in the dark, a killer who has set his sights on the ultimate trophy victim—Samantha.

Cynthia Eden digs deep into the mind of a serial killer and reveals the dark side of life as an FBI profiler. The first novel of the Killer Instinct series takes readers on a wild ride that they will not want to stop.

After the Dark is like a super sexy episode of Criminal Minds. The story opens as Samantha Dark, the best profiler the FBI could ever hope to employ, hunts the Sorority Slasher. The killer is smarter than any of them could have imagined as his subterfuge causes Sam her job and reputation. He was also Sam's casual lover in the past. Her former FBI partner, Blake Gamble, takes on the case when a copy cat killer picks up the hunt after the original killer disappears. The twisted plot further entices readers to the dark side when the copy cat killer targets Sam. The peace she sought after her dismissal in D.C. is disturbed when Blake draws her back into the search for a dangerous psychopath.

The chemistry between Blake and Sam drives this story. Sam's insecurities and the fact that Blake is her partner have kept her from pursuing a relationship. When those barriers are removed the heat between them increases tenfold and it makes the story even more intense. The cast of characters is intense enough, but with the uncertainty of Blake and Sam's relationship and her ties to the serial killer I couldn't say which makes the story the most interesting.

This romance suspense novel packs a punch with steamy romance while not forgetting the factor of suspense. To give readers an even better view of the duo's grueling task of catching killers, Cynthia Eden gives special attention to their profiling techniques. Sam is able to view crime scenes in the mindset of the killer, much better than any of her counterparts. It's a believable tactic that comes through very well in the story.

After the Dark gets points all around for standing out among the many enjoyable FBI suspense novels already published. Cynthia Eden takes it one step further by focusing on the unusual relationship between Sam and the serial killer. It gives you chills and pushes you to the edge of your seat all in one carefully planned novel!

After the Dark from Cynthia Eden is now LIVE!!

Four months after being fired from the FBI and retreating to her hometown of Fairhope, Alabama, former special agent Samantha Dark is still learning to enjoy the peaceful anonymity of small-town life. Her confidence shaken, Samantha avoids contact with others. After all, when monsters live in plain sight, it’s hard to trust anyone. But when her former partner, Agent Blake Gamble, the ultimate good guy and someone who’s always believed in her, comes to town seeking her help with his latest case, Samantha is torn. Her fabled instincts let her down once before, when the killer who ruined her career got away under her watch, and there are no guarantees they won’t again.

But Blake doesn’t believe in ever giving up…especially when it comes to Samantha. While they could never pursue their mutual attraction before, when they were partners, now there’s nothing standing in their way…except the specter of known serial killer Cameron Latham. Cameron always claimed he and Samantha both had a darkness within that connected them…until Blake came into her life. Samantha knows that darkness is real—that it’s what allows her to penetrate the minds of sadistic killers. The last thing Samantha could bear, however, is to reveal her dark side to Blake and have him recoil from her. Blake wants to prove to Samantha that he can handle all her secrets—she just needs to trust him. But Samantha learned to be careful about whom to trust. Those close to you can turn on you in an instant…

Blake’s current case turns out to be the work of a copycat killer—a psycho pupil of Cameron’s who is seeking vengeance for his former master by planning to kill Samantha. But it serves as a catalyst for something more venomous—a reason for Cameron himself to reemerge, deadlier than ever. The last person Cameron wants harmed is Samantha. He’s more interested in eliminating perceived rival Blake for good.

Two deadly killers are after them, but Blake and Samantha know every monster has a weakness. It’s just a matter of finding who it is before it’s too late…

An Extraordinary Love Story: An Extraordinary Union (Review)

As the Civil War rages between the states, a courageous pair of spies plunge fearlessly into a maelstrom of ignorance, deceit, and danger, combining their unique skills to alter the course of history and break the chains of the past . . .

Elle Burns is a former slave with a passion for justice and an eidetic memory. Trading in her life of freedom in Massachusetts, she returns to the indignity of slavery in the South—to spy for the Union Army.

Malcolm McCall is a detective for Pinkerton's Secret Service. Subterfuge is his calling, but he’s facing his deadliest mission yet—risking his life to infiltrate a Rebel enclave in Virginia.

Two undercover agents who share a common cause—and an undeniable attraction—Malcolm and Elle join forces when they discover a plot that could turn the tide of the war in the Confederacy's favor. Caught in a tightening web of wartime intrigue, and fighting a fiery and forbidden love, Malcolm and Elle must make their boldest move to preserve the Union at any cost—even if it means losing each other . . .

An Extraordinary Union is a tale I never expected to see in mainstream publishing, yet I dreamed. Alyssa Cole made that dream come true with this extraordinary love story set in the era of the Civil War. Elle Burns, a freed slave, is using her special talent to aid the Union. Her eidetic memory proves useful on many occasions and her latest mission requires her to return to slavery to spy on a prominent senator in the Confederacy.

While on her mission she works with Malcolm McCall, one of Pinkerton's most persuasive detectives. Though their first meeting can only be described as a disaster they find common ground in their fight for equality and freedom. Alyssa Cole's balanced writing brings this story to life as she creates a believable setting and authentic characters that are close to walking off the pages. Reading this story doesn't feel like sitting through a history class, although it's obvious Cole did her research to remain plausible.

Elle and Malcolm share an adventurous partnership as they risk everything for the sake of the Union. Our daring heroine is resistant to Malcolm's charm. He's exactly the kind of man she thinks she can't trust. On the other hand, Malcom believes she's everything he was meant to have in this world. Their  bold romance will breathe you in and only release you when their story comes to a close.

Even in the most tension-ridden situations An Extraordinary Union is filled to the brim with hope. This new series from Alyssa Cole, The Loyal League series, will continue to draw in readers from many walks of life. I find this story relatable and relevant for today's lovers of romance.

Take a Peek Inside Beth Anne Miller's A Star to Steer Her By (Excerpt)

I’m scarred. Broken. I’ll never be the same.
But I will take this journey.

Ever since my last dive ended in bloodshed, I’ve been terrified to go back into the water. But the opportunity to spend a semester at sea is too good to pass up. I need to get my life back.

I never expected to love it this much. And I never expected Tristan MacDougall.

Rugged, strong, and with demons of his own, Tristan helps me find the courage I thought I had lost and heals me with every stolen moment we share. But the rules of the ship mean we can't be together.
When a dive excursion goes terribly wrong, our only hope for survival is each other.

He held my hand as we glided slowly around the reef. The euphoria I felt at actually getting under the water faded as I squinted into the distant blue haze, on constant lookout for…anything that might be lurking out there. It was utterly silent, except for the Darth Vader-like sound of our breathing. That was one of the things I’d always loved best about scuba diving, the silence of it. For a short time, I could leave behind the noise of the world above and get lost in the alien world beneath the sea. I’d missed it so much.
My fear began to slip away. The reef was a huge mass of life and motion. Tiny yellow fish nibbled on purple sponges, vividly colored parrotfish pecked at coral with their sharp beaks, blue-and-yellow angelfish swam lazily between sea fans. None of them seemed disturbed by our presence. They just went about their business.
I’d almost forgotten Tristan was there until he tapped my arm and pointed to a big hole in the coral, where a slimy green head emerged on a sinuous neck. It was a moray eel. It stared at us, its mouth opening and closing to reveal glimpses of curved, needle-thin teeth. Novice divers tended to be afraid of them because their teeth looked wicked sharp. But I’d been around them enough to know that they opened and closed their mouths to breathe, not to be aggressive (usually), and I watched it for a moment, unafraid.
We continued exploring, my eyes remembering how to see beyond the camouflage to find the animal. A crusty “rock” sitting on the bottom was a scorpionfish. A mound of sand turned out to be a flounder. I still searched the blue waters around us, but less frequently than before. I even let go of Tristan’s hand.
Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a flash of silver. My heart started to pound. Take it easy, it’s probably a barracuda.
No, it wasn’t. Barracuda usually just hovered motionless in the water, seemingly menacing with their protruding teeth, but generally harmless to humans. This was moving quickly. And it was big. Where’d it go? I spun around.

There it was again, lurking just at the edge of my vision. Oh God, not again! Hiss-whoosh, hiss-whoosh. My breath came faster and faster.

About Beth Anne Miller

Beth Anne Miller’s first book, written in elementary school, was bound in pink fabric and was about—what else?—a girl and her horse. She soon began cheating on horses with the sea, becoming an open water scuba diver at age 14. That love of the sea led her to a college semester aboard a schooner. She returned with fond memories of the exhilaration of being on a ship under full sail, less fond memories of hurling over the leeward rail on a daily basis, and a sailing bug she couldn’t quite shake.

In addition to horses and the sea, she has a fascination for all things Scottish (including, but not limited to, men in kilts), which she explored with her first novel, INTO THE SCOTTISH MIST (The Wild Rose Press, 2011), and carried into her new novel, A STAR TO STEER HER BY (Entangled Embrace, March 2017). A native New Yorker, Beth Anne works in the publishing industry and is always looking ahead to her next voyage, whether a short one on a dive boat or whale watch, or, with luck, a longer one on a tall ship.

Blog Tour: Hard Justice (Review, Excerpt + Giveaway)

NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author Lori Foster returns with the second installment in her explosive new series featuring sexy bodyguards who’ll do anything to protect the ones they love.

Playing it safe has never felt so dangerous…

Justice Wallington knows how to harness his strength and intimidating size—skills he put to good use first in the MMA cage and now as a bodyguard at the Body Armor agency. But no opponent has ever left him feeling as off balance as his new client, heiress Fallon Wade. Far from a spoiled princess, she's sweet and intriguingly innocent. It's a risk-free assignment, until he's required to fake a relationship with her in order to blend in.

Sheltered from the world after a family tragedy, Fallon longs to experience life—going to bars, dancing, talking to strangers. Not easy with a huge, lethal-looking bodyguard shadowing her every move. Justice seems like her polar opposite, but pretending to be a couple stirs undeniable heat. And when danger strikes again, it's not just her safety in jeopardy, but a passion that's real, raw and absolutely against the rules…

Lori Foster must have some kind of super power, because there is no other way she could deliver the exact type of heroine I've been aching for! Just one chapter in and I could already claim how much I love Hard Justice.

The second installment in Lori Foster's Body Armor series features fighter Justice Wallington and young, sheltered Fallon Wade. Justice is hired to protect Fallon as she explores the world she shut out after a traumatic incident 5 years ago. Even though Justice doesn't know Fallon's past, or what could possibly be a threat to her, he vows to protect her as if the danger were obvious. As the assignment moves along the dangers to Fallon become more apparent and Justice won't rest until the threat is neutralized.

The story moves quickly but Foster manages to show Fallon and Justice's relationship grow over the course of months. It may be attraction at first sight, but readers get to see how the two forge a deep bond. As Justice brings Fallon deeper into his world, she finds a sense of camaraderie with the other MMA fighters. The Body Armor series is a spinoff of Lori Foster's Ultimate series, so fans of that series will see a lot of familiar characters. I applaud her ability to create so many rich and realistic characters that all fit well inside this story. There's a nice line of tension between Justice and another fighter that keeps you on the edge just waiting for a brawl.

I haven't read the Ultimate series, something I must remedy immediately, but I can whole-heartedly say that fans of that series will enjoy the Body Armor series. Hard Justice is the kind of story that I'll read over and over again, because I love it and it'll always give me that little shiver of satisfaction when I finish.

Start with Under Pressure:

Take a little peek inside Hard Justice!
When the doorbell rang, Fallon Wade’s heart jumped into a beat so furious, it stole her breath. He was here. She wasn’t ready, would never be ready, but she hadn’t been given a choice.

Opening her bedroom door very quietly, she tiptoed to the staircase landing and peeked over.

Her father and mother stood before the man, in her line of vision. But it didn’t matter. He towered over them and it’d take a giant to block him. Holy smokes. He had to be at least six-five.

Muscles bulged everywhere. Like…seriously. Everywhere. Shoulders, biceps, chest, neck; he stood in a casual pose, if a brick wall could ever be casual.

Dark hair stuck up in a messy faux hawk. An untrimmed goatee mixed with beard shadow covered a hard, square jaw. And his nose…well, his nose looked as if it had been broken. At least once.

Or maybe multiple times.

Oddly none of that detracted from his extremely rugged good looks, but rather added a dangerous, sexy edge. He certainly looked more than capable of providing protection.

While her father, no doubt a little shell-shocked, prattled on about what was and wasn’t acceptable for his “precious daughter,” the man shifted his weight, crossed his arms and, with polite impatience, listened.

Until he glanced up at her.

If I Run's Intense Sequel: If I'm Found (Review)

Is Dylan hunting Casey to prosecute her or protect her?

Casey Cox is still on the run, fleeing prosecution for a murder she didn’t commit. Dylan Roberts—her most relentless pursuer—is still on her trail, but his secret emails insist that he knows the truth and wants to help her. He’s let her escape before when he had her in his grasp, but trust doesn’t come easily.

As Casey works to collect evidence about the real murderers, she stumbles on another unbearable injustice: an abused child and a suicidal man who’s also been falsely accused. Casey risks her own safety to right this wrong and protect the little girl from her tormenters. But doing so is risky and just may result in her capture—and if she’s captured, she has no doubt she’ll be murdered before she ever steps foot in a jail.

In this riveting sequel to the USA Today bestseller If I Run, evil lurks, drawing Casey out of the shadows . . . but there is light shining in the darkness. Is Dylan a provision from the God who loves her, or another heartache yet to happen?

In If I'm Found, the engaging follow-up to If I Run, Casey Cox is still on the run. The law is getting ever closer to catching up with her, but she and the private investigator hired to find her are closer to unveiling the truth about her tormentors. Terri Blackstock once again pulls readers into Casey's story with a compelling plot of suspense and quest for vindication.

If you thought If I Run was intense, wait until you dive into If I'm Found. Casey finds herself in yet another situation where a young life is at stake and she's compelled to help. I admire Casey for being the heroine who would put the life of a child in danger above her own safety. Her distress when she meets a struggling family shows that she would help anyone in more need. However, there's a lot more at stake this time. Keegan and Rollins are getting desperate to find Casey before she can reveal their crimes, so they've become more aggressive in their pursuit. Dylan Roberts, on the other hand, is determined to uncover enough proof of Casey's innocence before they get to her.

While collecting enough evidence to bring Brent Pace's true murderer to justice is slow going, there's enough time for Dylan and Casey to forge a simmering connection. Though they have no time to establish a relationship in this novel, they are still the very definition of sweetness. Casey has to trust someone to help her and Dylan perfectly fits the bill. As a man with faith he shows Casey what it's like to have true faith and reassures her that they will see a way through this situation.

If I'm Found shows Casey at her most vulnerable and at the point where she's quickly losing all hope. Readers will be rooting for Casey the whole way as she narrowly avoids capture and defeat. Terri Blackstock continues to engage readers with an emotional plot with enough twists and turns to please any suspense lover!

A Down to Earth Western Romance: Forever a Hero (Review)

For the youngest Carson brother, finding—and fixing—trouble seems to be all in a day's work

Mace Carson doesn't consider himself a hero. Back in college, he came upon a woman in trouble and intervened—but he was just one irate Wyoming cowboy with his boots planted firmly on the side of right. Now a successful vintner, Mace is shocked to be reunited with the woman he saved. But it turns out she's in Wyoming on business…a corporate executive representing the company that wants to buy his winery. Only, he's not selling.

Kelly Wright has never forgotten that horrible night ten years ago when Mace came to her rescue, has never forgotten him. The surprising success of a winery in the middle of ranch country has brought her to Mustang Creek, and she's secretly thrilled to discover Mace at the helm. Reluctant to mix business with pleasure, Kelly vows to keep things professional, until her attacker is released from prison and comes for vengeance…against both of them.

Pub Date: 3/21/17

Genre: Western Romance

Linda Lael Miller revisits the Carsons of Mustang Creek, this time focusing on the youngest Carson brother: Mace. In Forever a Hero, Kelly Wright is on a mission to persuade vintner Mace to sell his small but successful winery to Great Grapes International. Despite their former acquaintance, Kelly the maiden in distress and Mace her knight in shining armor, Kelly is determined not to mix pleasure with business.

I love western romances and Forever a Hero is one of the best I've read so far. The story takes off after Mace saves Kelly from an unfortunate accident, yet again. The tension between the two characters is palpable as they try to figure out how to proceed. Mace is determined not to sell, but he's willing to keep Kelly around to explore their personal connection. Mace and Kelly are two intellectuals with a passion for wine. While Mace focuses on perfecting the taste and tone of each of his wines, Kelly is the marketing guru. She knows just the right words to use to convince others of her ideas. The two are an obvious match and its fun to see them come around to the same conclusion.

A bit of suspense is thrown into the mix of this storyline when Kelly's attacker is released from a ten year stint in jail. The big question is whether or not he's willing to risk going back to jail for the sake of getting revenge. This part of the plot rounds the story out a bit, but I actually would have liked to see it expanded upon. This character was mostly a shadow that caused Kelly and Mace to watch their backs, and it didn't make a strong impact until the end of the novel. Even then it was over and done with in a matter of paragraphs.

The plot is fast paced but leaves enough time for readers to experience the fresh Wyoming landscape.  I even feel like I went to the Mountain Winery vineyard myself and walked among the rows and rows of growing grapes. Linda Lael Miller has a way of writing characters who are so in tune with their surroundings that their stories feel authentic. Their desires and goals are so believable and realistic which adds a rich layer of drama when plans don't work out quite in the way they expected. Fans of the Carson brothers will revel in this latest installment, and readers unfamiliar will be itching to visit Mustang Creek!

A Mystery in its Own Class: The Cutaway (Review)

The Cutaway draws you into the tangled world of corruption and cover-up as a young television producer investigates the disappearance of a beautiful Georgetown lawyer in this stunning psychological thriller, perfect for fans of Paula Hawkins and Gillian Flynn.

When brilliant TV news producer Virginia Knightly receives a disturbing “MISSING” notice on her desk related to the disappearance of a beautiful young attorney, she can’t seem to shake the image from her head. Despite skepticism from her colleagues, Knightly suspects this ambitious young lawyer may be at the heart of something far more sinister, especially since she was last seen leaving an upscale restaurant after a domestic dispute. Yet, as the only woman of power at her station, Knightly quickly finds herself investigating on her own.

Risking her career, her life, and perhaps even her own sanity, Knightly dives deep into the dark underbelly of Washington, DC business and politics in an investigation that will drag her mercilessly through the inextricable webs of corruption that bind the press, the police, and politics in our nation’s capital.

Harkening to dark thrillers such as Gone Girl, Luckiest Girl Alive, and Big Little Lies, The Cutaway is a striking debut that will haunt you long after you reach the last page.

Pub Date: 3/21/17
Atria / 37 Ink
Genre: Mystery/Thriller

Christina Kovac's debut novel, The Cutaway, is a drama that drags readers in and doesn't let go until the mystery is solved. Its heroine, Virginia Knightly, is a savvy news producer that takes on a missing persons case that blows up into a big news piece. To keep her station in the lead and protect the dignity of this unknown woman, Virginia dedicates her resources to discovering the truth about Evelyn Carney.

Though The Cutaway is anything but average, its mystery is a classic 'whodunit' as Virginia faces deception and subterfuge. No part of Evelyn Carney's disappearance is straightforward, not even the witnesses or Virginia's sources. It's pretty easy to take a stab at who the culprit is early on in the novel, but this is one time where it doesn't detract from the story. Kovac utilizes the greed and corruption of public officials to create red herrings and suspicion. The story has an even fast pace bringing readers all the excitement of a thriller and entertainment of a well executed plot. There's even time for the beginnings of a steamy romance.

Like reaching into a hat filled with diamonds and pulling out a piece of gold, The Cutaway is a mystery in its own class. Its fresh and unique take on unraveling a complex mystery is so gripping that I'm surprised this is only Christina Kovac's debut! This is the mystery to read this spring!

A Riveting Suspense: If I Run (Review)

Casey knows the truth.

But it won’t set her free.

Casey Cox’s DNA is all over the crime scene. There’s no use talking to police; they have failed her abysmally before. She has to flee before she’s arrested . . . or worse. The truth doesn’t matter anymore.

But what is the truth? That’s the question haunting Dylan Roberts, the war-weary veteran hired to find Casey. PTSD has marked him damaged goods, but bringing Casey back can redeem him. Though the crime scene seems to tell the whole story, details of the murder aren’t adding up. Casey Cox doesn’t fit the profile of a killer. But are Dylan’s skewed perceptions keeping him from being objective? If she isn’t guilty, why did she run?

Unraveling her past and the evidence that condemns her will take more time than he has, but as Dylan’s damaged soul intersects with hers, he is faced with two choices. The girl who occupies his every thought is a psychopathic killer . . . or a selfless hero. And the truth could be the most deadly weapon yet.

If I Run, the start of Terri Blackstock's new series, immediately opens to a scene that is both worrying and intriguing. It raises questions that beg to be answered as readers stumble upon a young women who appears to be fleeing from the law. A traumatic event from her past left Casey Cox with a deep mistrust of police, so when she finds the body of her best friend, she believes her only choice is to run as far as possible before they blame her for his murder.

Everything about If I Run riveted me as I tried to unravel Casey's story. As it unfolded I almost felt like I was reading a cozy mystery, but there aren't enough elements for it to fall completely in that category. Her story is interesting before you get all the details, and when you become privy to the truth her story becomes something greater. Between the alternating perspectives of Casey and the private investigator hired to find her If I Run shows its layers. These layers are cleverly arranged to form an engaging, suspenseful story that will beg to be finished in one sitting.

Dylan and Casey are on opposite sides of the investigation. However, he believes that bringing Casey to face justice could be his way to a normal life. A way for him to overcome the PTSD that makes others regard him as unstable or unpredictable. As the chase intensifies so does his investigation to understand Casey's motives and state of mind, but things aren't adding up. Another layer is added to keep readers guessing about the outcome of this game of cat and mouse. The heart-pounding climax of the plot serves to increase the dramatic element of the story while clearly showing the truth of the heroine. I must say that the strength of these characters is obvious if only they could see it themselves, as well.

The high emotions make If I Run an intense read that completely engages you in the story. Going from one with little faith, Casey learns that she's not alone in so many ways. As a person who loves people, it's a lesson that brings her some form of comfort. I honest can't imagine the course of the next book, but I can't wait to see how her story plays out in the next title, If I'm Found. I know that the ending will not be disappointing!

The Next Chapter in an Explosive Series: The Devil's Triangle (Review)

From New York Times bestselling authors Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison comes the highly anticipated thriller in their Brit in the FBI series, featuring special agents Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine in their new roles as heads of the Covert Eyes team—but will their first case be their last when the enigmatic and dangerous thief known as the Fox reappears?

“He who controls the weather, will control the world. He who controls time, will never be around.” —Thomas Frey

FBI Special Agents Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine are the government’s Covert Eyes—leading a top-notch handpicked team of agents to tackle crimes and criminals both international and deadly. But their first case threatens their fledgling team when the Fox calls from Venice asking for help.

Kitsune has stolen an incredible artifact from the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul, and now the client wants her dead. She has a warning for Nick and Mike: she’s overheard talk that a devastating Gobi desert sandstorm that’s killed thousands in Beijing isn’t a natural phenomenon, rather is produced by man. The Covert Eyes team heads to Venice, Italy, to find out the truth.

From New York to Venice and from Rome to the Bermuda Triangle, Nicholas and Mike and their team are in a race against time, and nature herself, to stop an obsessed family from devastating Washington, DC.

The fabulous writing duo, Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison up the stakes in The Devil's Triangle as Special Agents Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine lead their first Covert Eyes mission. Everyone's favorite master thief, Kitsune, aka the Fox, is back and she's asking Nicholas and Mike for help.

It seems like a straightforward mission: fly to Italy to rescue the Fox's husband and bring her back in handcuffs. When the crew lands bullets fly and the team finds themselves tracking the most dangerous suspects yet. With every novel written in this series Coulter and Ellison push the envelope more and more. The plots stretch broader and become more complex while running the risk of becoming outlandish, but The Devil's Triangle doesn't completely fall off track. I expected the story to focus on the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle, but that was more on the periphery of a much bigger plot. Five generations of the Koath family have been obsessed with finding Ark of the Covenant. They believe it's their destiny to protect it or use its sacred power to gain eternity. It was quite a stretch for two epic concepts to be melded into this gargantuan plot, but somehow Coulter and Ellison pulled it off. There is quite a bit of info dump throughout the novel, which is one aspect that tempts me to skip through the story, but sets it apart from a regular mystery. The reader is privy to bits of information that's later repeated when the agents figure it out. We're aware of the culprit so there isn't usually an element of surprise as far as 'whodunit'. The surprise element comes from seeing what kind of trouble Nicholas and Michaela stumble upon in the course of their investigation.

The Devil's Triangle, along with the previous novels in the series so far, is jammed packed with action. From car chases to cliff jumps -- it's all there and you don't want to miss out on an adrenaline packed novel! Even with the nearly non-stop action it still manages to be a well-rounded story. The Covert Eyes team has become my favorite group of people to hang out with. Though Nicholas and Mike have this wild romance blossoming behind the scenes, readers get a peek of their connection as they hunt down criminals together. Other regular agents from the series like Ben Houston, Adam Pearce and Louisa Barry seem to have stronger presences and roles in the story.

A Brit in the FBI is truly an ingenious series! It reminds me a bit of Sandra Brannan's Liv Bergen mystery series on an international scale with much more fast-paced action. The characters are sharp, witty, and just a little bit scary as they take on whatever big bad adversaries stand in the way of justice. To Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison: keep 'em coming ladies!

Lord of the Mountains (Review)

Amid the glittering fjords and majestic mountains of Norway, this stunning series delves into the loves, battles, and dreams of the Viking clans—powerful men and women who believed in the call of the flesh as well as the soul…

It was said that the man who could look into Silvi Ivarsdottir's eyes would be meant for her. Powerful jarl Magnus Sigrundson knows he is that man, and that Silvi's dowry can give him the ships, swords, and silver he needs for his trading empire. Yet beautiful Silvi's dream is not to be a wife, but a Priestess of the gods for the great temple at Uppsala. Who dares interfere with such passion? The answer lies in Silvi herself, in the way her body awakens to Magnus' touch, in the way she inspires a reverence he didn't know he possessed—and in the battles she takes on when she journeys to his mountain home of Thorsfjell.

But soon a dangerous, deceitful enemy threatens to shatter. Now they face another quest: can they find each other again—and dare live and love in each other's worlds?

Sabrina Jarema's Norse inspired Viking Lords series continues with Lord of the Mountains. Eirik Ivarsdottir's village has been cleared of thugs and he is nearing the end of his marriage celebrations. His wife's brother, Magnus Sigrundson, is preparing to head back home, but not without taking the chance to persuade Silvi Ivarsdottir to visit Thorsfjell. Silvi, on the other hand, is stubbornly determined to give herself to the gods and become a priestess at Upsala. Her family has other intentions for her.

The story concept is great, but I wish there had been more fire in Silvi. I didn't immediately love her and honestly by the end I thought she was just okay. There seemed to be some conflict in her character, because her mother and brother believed she was strong based on the fact that one had to be in order to channel the power of the gods, but she acted very naive and needy and just didn't show that strength well. Magnus was a rock throughout and proved time and time again that he was worthy of Silvi's love. I did enjoy watching their romance unfold, because their love was not immediate, or easy.

Lord of the Mountains made me feel like I was reading a contemporary military romance transferred to another time and place. Readers follow the warriors into battle and get a sense of their strength and ideals, while entertained by the antics of two people navigating the rough waters of an uncertain relationship. Overall, I enjoyed Sabrina Jarema's style and attention to detail. I have no inkling of Norse culture, but I was able to easily envision the story and believe Silvi had once walked upon the lands of Norway. I'm eager to continue the series to see what other angles she can work from this fascinating group of people, because she definitely laid out the possibilities. Lord of the Seas will no doubt be an interesting addition to the Viking Lords series!

Hunted (Review)

Beauty knows the Beast’s forest in her bones—and in her blood. Though she grew up with the city’s highest aristocrats, far from her father’s old lodge, she knows that the forest holds secrets and that her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering them.

So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronessas…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman. But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance.

Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts this strange Beast back into his own territory—a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of creatures that Yeva’s only heard about in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin or salvation. Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?

I had not yet been inclined to read anything by Meagan Spooner, but I couldn't pass up the chance that Hunted was going to be an intriguing story of a strong heroine with an awesome ability.

Yeva, or Beauty, was definitely a strong heroine with a talent for hunting, but her story was less than stellar. The opening was a close resemblance to Feyre's circumstances in A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. Yeva is also the youngest sister who will be called upon to use her hunting skills to care for the family when their father loses their fortune. The family is dropped from high society and moved to a little cabin next to the wilderness. There are obviously some differences in the details, but they are minute. The story eventually makes a sharp right turn down a different plot path, but the similarities in the opening are glaring and too close for me to appreciate the differences that follow.

Hunted is a mix of folklore with a twist. Yes, it is different from any retelling I've read, but is it better? I honestly don't believe so. The overall finish felt more like the result of taking the best parts of multiple stories and melding them together to create a logical plot. I read and appreciate stories all the time that are inspired by something that came before, whether it be fairy tale or some other classic. I liked those stories because they rose above their inspiration and became something completely other and unique, with a little hat tip to the original source. A good example of that is The Wish Granter by C.J. Redwine, which is an original story that weaves in the familiar legend of Rumpelstiltskin.

I wasn't amazed by the story as a whole. I just think it could've been made into something more in terms of originality and uniqueness.
